Route of the Sands

Day by Day

• Day 1 – São Luís
  Destination: Saint Louis, MO
  Disembark in São Luís and transfer to the accommodation. Free time and overnight in the chosen accommodation category.
• DAY 2 – São Luís / Barreirinhas
  Destination: Barreirinhas
  After breakfast, we will board the minibus/ van to Barreirinhas in Lençóis Maranhenses, a trip of approximately 4 hours (optional: overflight of Lençóis Maranhenses).
  Free afternoon to visit the city center with its local craft shops, bars and restaurants (optional: tour to Casa de Farinha, Cardosa or National Park – not included). Overnight at the inn of the chosen category. 
• Day 3 – Barreirinhas
  Destination: Barreirinhas
  Breakfast and free time. After lunch (not included), we will take a walk to the impressive Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Aboard a 4×4 (boat) we will cross the Preguiças River by ferry and take the sand trails for about 40 minutes until we reach the entrance of the park.
  We will visit the best lagoons of the season and its incredibly clear waters, an irresistible invitation to a bath. Before returning to the accommodation, we will experience the sunset in Lençóis Maranhenses, one of the most remarkable experiences that nature can provide us.
• Day 4 – Barreirinhas / Caburé / Atins
  Destination: Atins
  After breakfast and with the bags already packed, we will be taken to the port where we will board the speedboats through the Preguiças River to Caburé Beach. On the way, palm trees and mangroves are home to birds, reptiles and mammals. The first stop will be in the village of Vassouras, one of the many points where the dunes of Pequenos Lençóis meet the Preguiças River. Monkeys and parrots make the feast of tourists who stop to cool off with cold drinks served in the shade of the tents. We will then take the motor boat to the lighthouse of Mandacaru, in the village of the same name, which from the top of its eight floors will reveal in 360 degrees all the exuberance of the place. We will continue to the village of Caburé and its rustic inns and restaurants, where we will have lunch (not included).
  Then we will cross the Preguiças until we reach the village of Atins, where we will spend the night.
• Day 5 – Atins
  Destination: Atins
  After breakfast, we will go for a walk to Canto do Atins, a small village that serves as the gateway to Lençóis. We will visit the best lagoons of the season and stop for lunch (not included) at Luzia’s or Antônio’s restaurant, famous for its typical cuisine throughout the region. Then we will return to the village of Atins and have some free time to stroll or simply rest in the chosen accommodation category.
• Day 6 – Atins / Caburé / Parnaíba
  Destination: Parnaíba
  After breakfast, we will cross the Preguiças River in a speedboat and say goodbye to the Lençóis aboard a powerful 4×4. Deserted beaches, fields and dunes make up the landscape in this stretch.
  We will pass by Paulino Neves who shows his streets of white sand and his wooden bridge over the Rio Novo. Then we will travel 110 km of asphalt to Parnaíba, crossing the border between Piauí and Maranhão, where the Jandira Bridge over the Parnaíba River is located.
  At 640 meters long, it’s a great place to take good photos! In the afternoon, we will be transferred to the Port of Tatus, where we will board a speedboat through the majestic labyrinth of islands of the Parnaíba Delta towards the Bay of Caju and Guarás Island.
  During the tour there is a stop at Morro do Meio for a quick walk over the gigantic dunes of Caju Bay and a dip in the waters of the Parnaíba River. The beautiful maned bird with its bright red plumage can be seen in the hundreds as it perches at sunset in a rare and unforgettable spectacle (animal sightings depend on several natural factors combined). We will return to Porto Tatus, where we will be transferred for fifteen minutes to the hotel, where we will spend the night.
• Day 7 – Parnaíba
  Destination: Parnaíba
  After breakfast, we will take a panoramic walk along the east coast of Piauí. We will travel by road with stops at the beaches of Ataláia, Coqueiro, Maramar, Macapá, Lagoa do Portinho and Árvore Penteada (there may be changes in order and on the way due to natural conditions).
  This is a great time to get to know the beaches and take pictures.
  After the tour, we will return to Parnaíba. Overnight at the hotel. 
• Day 8 – Parnaíba / Teresina
  Destination: Teresina
  After breakfast, we will continue to Teresina by air-conditioned bus.
  End of services (Optional: check the possibility of leaving by São Luís).
