Trekking Lençóis Maranhenses

Day by Day

• DAY 1 – São Luis
  Destination: São Luis
  Disembark in São Luís and transfer to accommodation.
• DAY 2 – São Luís / Barreirinhas
  Destination: Barreirinhas
  After breakfast, we will board the minibus/van to Barreirinhas in Lençóis Maranhenses, a 4-hour trip (optional: overflight flight from Lençóis Maranhenses).
  After registration and lunch (not included), we will take an excursion to the impressive Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
  On board the 4×4 (boat) we will cross the Preguiças River by ferry and we will take the sandy paths for about 40 minutes until the entrance of the park. We will visit the best lagoons of the season and their incredibly clear waters, an irresistible invitation to swim. Before returning to the accommodation, we will live the sunset in Lençóis Maranhenses, one of the most remarkable experiences that nature can give us.
• DAY 3 – Barreirinhas / Rincon de Atins
  Destination: Atíns
  After breakfast we will have free time to prepare the backpacks that will be taken on the trek (the larger ones will be stored in our office in Barreirinhas).
  Next we will go to the Port where we will receive the first instructions for the adventure that awaits us. We will embark on a motor launch towards Atins, going down the Preguiças River (approximately 01h trip).
  Along the way we will make stops in Vassouras, Caburé (Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses) and Mandacaru.
  Disembark at the port of Atins and board the 4×4 for 15 minutes to the rustic restaurant and Antônio fisherman’s dormitory to stay.
  The local cuisine is based on seafood, such as shrimps and fish (dinner is not included). Free evening to socialize with the locals. Spend the night in Redário in Canto do Atins.
• DAY 4 – Rincón de Atins / Río Negro / Baixa Grande
  Destination: Baixa Grande
  After breakfast, departure at 06:00 (or according to the tide table) to start the adventure. Leave in a 4×4 vehicle to the mouth of the Río Negro (20km in a 4×4 vehicle along the coast).
  Arriving at the mouth of the river we begin the first walk, about 6 km through the dunes (approx. 03h30) until we reach Baixa Grande – one of the Oasis of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
  Throughout the tour we will contemplate the best lagoons in the park, at the stops it is important to cool off and use sun protection, at the beginning of the day a kit with sandwiches will be distributed to replenish energy.
  In Baixa Grande, after lodging, lunch and regional dinner based on chicken or caipira goat (not included) prepared by the residents of the Oasis. At the end of the day, we can see the sunset on a dune very close to the redário.
  Free night to spend with the locals. Spend the night at the Redário in Baixa Grande.
• DAY 5 – Baixa Grande / Queimada dos Britos
  Destination: Queimada dos Britos
  After breakfast, departure at 06:00 am (or to be agreed with the guide), we will continue our adventure. This day we will walk 09km (approx. 5 hours).
  Throughout the way we will contemplate the best lagoons in the Park, at the stops the important thing is to cool off and use sunscreen, at the beginning of the day a kit with a snack will be distributed to recover energy.
  We will settle in Queimada dos Britos and take the opportunity to get to know the town and its characters, this other oasis in the “middle” of the National Park has already been the scene of many films such as Casa de Areia (House of Sand) and many national and international reports .
  Lunch and regional dinner based on rustic chicken (not included) prepared by the owners of the accommodation. Free night to spend time with local residents. Spend the night in the Queimada dos Britos redário.
• DAY 6 – Queimada dos Britos / Betânia / Santo Amaro
  Destination: Santo Amaro
  After breakfast, departure at 04:00am (or to be agreed with the guide), we will leave Queimada dos Britos to continue walking to Betânia (12km – approx. 7:00am) arriving at 11:00am.
  At stops, it is important to refresh yourself. At the beginning of the day a kit with a snack will be distributed to replenish energy.
  This section is the best known for the largest lagoons in the Park. Arrival in Betânia and stop for lunch (not included). At 1:30 p.m. we leave Betânia in a 4×4 to be transferred to Santo Amaro, the end point of the walk.
  At 3:30 p.m. we will visit the Gaivota Lagoon to swim and watch the sunset. Return to Santo Amaro around 6:00 p.m. Free night to visit the quiet city of Santo Amaro do Maranhão. Sleep in Santo Amaro.
• DAY 7 – Santo Amaro / São Luis
  Destination: São Luis
  Morning break in Santo Amaro to get to know the city and the daily life of the inhabitants. At 4:00 p.m., departure in a 4×4 vehicle (jardineira) towards Povoado Sangue (36 km covered in 1 hour, on a dirt and asphalt road).
  Change vehicles and board between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in a van or minibus in the direction of São Luís (200 km traveled in 03h, asphalt). Arrival around 21:00 in São Luís.
